New Balance 5740 的誕生，是為了回答一個簡單卻牽涉廣泛的問題：如果改良 574 這雙史上最 New Balance 的運動鞋，結果會如何？沒有華麗外表，實搭到幾乎不用多想的元祖 574，在當年依舊能獨樹一格，主打融合公路／越野賽道的設計，而非強調科技元素。5740 延續適應多種地形的概念，加上幾年的研發探索，為經典設計賦予嶄新詮釋。較窄的鞋楦使整體輪廓更俐落流線，並加入一系列醒目特色。獨創的中底設計將經典 574 的結構加寬，結合 90 年代科技感細節，擋泥板和鞋眼則裝飾 80 年代流行的波浪形狀。此款為復古運動鞋。
